Essential Oil of the Month: Vetiver

April 10, 2023 By Matt Schaefer

Vetiver
Ah, the promise of Springtime – fresh air, new grasses, blossoms, and flowers. While April showers may indeed bring May flowers, those gloomy days can put a damper on moods. And I can’t think of April without the apprehension of Tax season. For these reasons, Vetiver is our solution.

Known as the “Oil of Tranquility,” Vetiver’s gift is one of soothing, stress-releasing deep relaxation. Excellent to help with a good night’s sleep, “Vetiver stops the swirling of the mind, the turmoil of unanswerable questions.” (The Fragrant Heavens, Valerie Ann Worwood p.283)

Beneficial Properties of Vetiver:

  • Grounding
  • Calming
  • Sedative
  • Antiseptic
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Aphrodisiac

With its deep, earthy scent Vetiver reminds us of rich, nurturing soil and the plants, the new life, that springs from it. Grounding and soothing, it lifts moods and melancholy.

Indeed grounding, the essential oil is derived from the root of the plant that grows deep in the soil. Unique in its growth pattern, the roots of the Vetiver plant extend straight down, rather than spreading, and is thus used to prevent soil erosion.

Uses of Vetiver Throughout History:

In one of the oldest practices using Vetiver, the roots were woven into mats, rugs, window coverings, and baskets for their cooling effect and for scenting the air with their unique aroma. As a bonus, it also helps to repel certain insects, thus its use in bedding and roofing.

In the ancient practice of Ayurveda, Vetiver is prized for its cooling effects and its use for digestion and in skincare. Hydrating, soothing, nourishing, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, it is often used for acne and other mild skin conditions. It is also used in meditation, thought to inspire wisdom and creativity, and visionary insights.

In perfumery, Vetiver is highly valued for its rich, earthy, smoky aroma. Used as a base (deep) note, it is known as the tobacco scent. Its phytochemical components cannot be reproduced synthetically, making it even more important in the industry.

Used in aromatherapy applications, Vetiver can be helpful for sore muscles and joints, and helps to ease a worried mind. It is also thought to have aphrodisiac qualities.

For a Vetiver blend that involves more essential oils with sensual, aphrodisiac properties, mix the following:

3 drops Bergamot

2 Drops Vetiver

1 Drop Rose Maroc

For a livelier spring vibe blend, mix the following:

3 drops Bergamot

2 Drops Vetiver

1 Drop Rose Maroc

Use in a diffuser or add to 2oz distilled water for a room spritz. Roll the spray bottle in your hands to warm and blend before spraying.

Precautions:

Possible skin sensitivity. Keep out of reach of children. As with any essential oils, if you are pregnant, nursing, or have other medical conditions, consult your physician before use. Avoid contact with eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas.
